Full Scale Experiments on Roll Cooling

Rotating test bench is used for this kind of test. The current level of laboratory measurements allows using completely identical configuration of cooling system in laboratory as in industry. Full-scale experiments use several rows of nozzles positioned in the same way as in real rolling mill. The same approach is used when testing an efficiency of new design of cooling. Pump station with 150 kW motor is sufficient for water supply to test any configuration of spray cooling used in industry.

Example of experimental results

The obtained HTC curves show the distribution of cooling intensity round the roll. The experiment uses periodic spraying of the test plate. Each row of water jets can be recognised separately in the results if the rows of nozzles are not aimed to one point. Typical example is shown here. The side view of the sprays shows three separate groups of jets used in experiment.
